Schools in New South Wales and Victoria dominate that national list of the top ten most expensive schools in Australia. However, with a 5.59% increase in average school fees across the state in 2023, Queensland’s school fee increases are above the 4.49% national average. So, we have put together a run-down of the top 10 most expensive schools in Queensland to see where they sit in relation to their southern counterparts.

Brisbane Grammar School is officially Queensland’s most expensive school in 2023, coming in at $31,630 per year for a Year 12 student.

1. Brisbane Grammar School (BGS)

Location: Spring Hill, Queensland
Established over 150 years ago, Brisbane Grammar School is an independent secondary school for boys – the oldest in Queensland. Based in Spring Hill, inner Brisbane, the school takes in students from Year 5 to Year 12. Schooling around 1,500 students, approximately 100 of these are boarders.

Location: Toowong, Queensland
In July 2023, Brisbane Boys’ College was one of only two Australian schools to be awarded an honourable mention in the final round of the IM2C (International Mathematical Modelling Challenge). Also in 2023, the school announced a First Nations bursaries programme alongside the CBA.

Coming in as the first school under $30k in our list, ‘Churchie’ is the second richest school in Queensland behind Brisbane Grammar School. Like the first two schools on our list, Churchie is also a school for boys, with classes from Reception up to Year 12.

In 2020, for a second year running, St Margaret’s was named ‘Boarding School of the Year’ by the Australian Education Awards. Following this accolade up in 2021, Jane Martens (Secondary Teacher) was a winner of the Rising Stars award while in 2023 Georgi Eadie won the same award.

This school for boys located on the Gold Coast is the oldest Anglican boys’ boarding school in Queensland. Taking in ages from Reception through to Year 12, The Southport School is unique in that it is the only boys boarding school on the Gold Coast.

The final school in our list is Stuartholme School, a Catholic secondary school for girls, meaning that no co-educational schools were included in the list. The school itself was listed on the Brisbane Heritage Register in 2013 and has close to 700 students enrolled.
